Toumaï, un crâne vieux de 7 millions d'années découvert en 2001 au Tchad par une équipe dirigée par Michel Brunet, est supposé être le plus ancien ancêtre connu des hommes. C'est l'époque où se sont séparées deux lignées de l'ancêtre commun, l'une conduisant aux singes actuels, l'autre au genre Homo.
