La notion de timbre renvoie à la qualité du son : on parle du timbre d'un instrument de musique, on dit qu'une voix est timbrée. Mais c'est une notion qui n'est pas facile à cerner. Le timbre est souvent considéré comme une signature caractérisant la source sonore : on reconnaît un instrument par son timbre.
