Il est le plus haut col routier des Pyrénées centrales françaises. Situé près de Tarbes, dans les Hautes Pyrénées et dans la région Midi-Pyrénées, il est dominé par le pic du Midi de Bigorre au nord (2 872 m) et au sud par le pic d'Espade (2 467 m).

Tentez de vous maintenir à un rythme régulier en grimpant l'ensemble de l'ascension à la même cadence. Une montée normale s'effectue à 80 ou 90 tours par minute. Si vous constatez que votre rythme de pédalage ralentit lors d'une montée, passez sur une vitesse plus facile et augmentez la cadence de pédalage.
