Dans la danse il est commode de compter les demi-temps plutôt que les temps, c'est pour cela que dans la majorité des cours de salsa le compte est 1,2, 3 (4) 5,6,7(8) : 1,3,5,7 correspondent aux temps ( temps forts : 1 et 5 ; temps faibles : 3 et 7) 2,4,6,8 correspondent aux contre-temps.
