Selon Henri Lhote, les Peuls seraient originaires de la Haute vallée du Nil : Haute-Égypte, Nubie et Éthiopie. En étudiant les peintures rupestres du Tassili n'Ajjer, il pensait que les peintures rupestres de bovins permettraient de suivre l'avancée de ce peuple, à travers des représentations stylisées dans le Sahara.
