Nous sommes au tout début des années 1890. On raconte que c'est après le rachat, par l'empereur allemand Guillaume II, du célèbre Thistle que l'on confie à l'architecte naval George Lennox Watson la conception d'un voilier qui portera le nom de Britannia. La construction a lieu en 1892 au chantier D&W Henderson Yard.
