A battlefield, battleground, or field of battle is the location of a present or historic battle involving ground warfare. It is commonly understood to be limited to the point of contact between opposing forces, though battles may involve troops covering broad geographic areas.

The original Battlefield was Battlefield 1942, and took place in a loosely (very, very loosely) historical World War II setting. When DICE decided to revisit the “dawn of all-out war” they decided to nod to this game taking place before every other game in the series by naming it Battlefield 1.
