Entre 19, il travaille pour divers organismes boursiers et parallèlement publie contes et poèmes dans des revues. Il prend à cette époque pour pseudonyme Apollinaire d'après le prénom de son grand-père maternel, Apollinaris, qui rappelle Apollon, dieu de la poésie.
