Le Mah-Jong se joue à quatre. Le but du jeu est de faire Mah-Jong, c'est à dire arriver à utiliser ses quatorze tuiles pour former quatre combinaisons et une paire. Le joueur faisant Mah-Jong l'annonce en disant « Hu ». La paire est composée de deux tuiles identiques.
