L'emploi du breton était sanctionné avec le port du symbole, appelé vache, ou ar vuoc'h, en breton. Le symbole pouvait prendre plusieurs formes : une paire de sabots en bois, un galet, ou encore un bout de bois. Le poids de ces symboles s'exprimait particulièrement dans les cours de récréation.
