Il lui arrive parfois de communiquer en tambourinant les branches mortes avec son bec. Mais cette attitude lui permet surtout de trouver de la nourriture dans le bois sec dont il jauge la résonnance. C'est un bruit très particulier qui nous permet de deviner sa présence.
